Even baseball cards can be ironic. Such is the case with this 2008 Upper Deck Ball Park Collection trading card. Numbered as (1/1) this unique card is titled "Yankee Stadium Legacy" and bears an unlikely pairing of signatures with George Steinbrenner (d.2010) and Nelson Mandela (d.2013). More on our website.
These historic figures are well known respectively with one having been overbearing and oppressive and the other having suffered great oppression. As head of the New York Yankees organization Steinbrenner regularly made headlines for firing managers and displaying generally outrageous behavior, while Mandela suffered extended imprisonment only to emerge as the first black president of South Africa. These two men are linked by Mandela's 1990 appearance at a Yankee Stadium concert, for which Steinbrenner graciously footed the bill and they are linked forever with this important card which bears their signatures on matted cuts with Steinbrenner ("9") and Mandela ("9-10"). Presenting as (NM-MT) this card is printed on the reverse with a UD declaration stating these signatures were authenticated by a third party.
In fairness to "The Boss", he often poked fun at himself by way of appearances in beer commercials with Billy Martin, on Saturday Night Live, in a credit card commercial with Derek Jeter and finally putting his stamp of approval on the unforgettable Seinfeld episodes featuring a fictionalized version of himself.
