There's no doubt this set was assembled by a real old school collector. Offered is a 1941 Gum Inc. R157 Uncle Sam complete set of (96). This classic military series was issued during the year leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor and depicts the preparedness of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Whether this timely release was coincidental or intentional with the belief America would soon have to enter WWII, this late hour pre-war set earned a permanent place in the hearts of collectors and is rich in historical tradition.
The (96) cards in this set are nicely matched examples showing fairly consistent condition quality. Some are brighter than others and a small number are miss-cut or off-center, but as a whole they are generally solid and pleasing with a grade average of (GD to GD+, 10% lesser). With deference to a few minor exceptions, this carefully curated set is free of issues such as creasing, pin holes, tears and other displeasing afflictions typically found in cards of such advanced age. Overall the main condition concerns are moderate corner wear and expected toning of varying degrees, other than that they are pleasing and indicate they were the property of the aforementioned "old schooler", who surely knew what he was doing.
