Dr. J singlehandedly elevated dunking to an art form—and Mike Kuyper has created the ultimate artistic tribute. Erving soars through the air a la his landmark foul-line jam in the 1976 ABA Slam-Dunk Contest, only now he's in his Sixers heyday. The 21x30 piece is based on a well-known Sports Illustrated shot by noted photographer John McDonough during a Lakers game at the Forum. In an inspired departure, Kuyper has stripped away the surrounding players and crowd, plus changed Erving's uniform from away red to home white, to create the starkest possible contrast between a black backdrop and the Doctor's bright, luminescent form. Pure poetry in motion. Basketball as ballet. This is the one-and-only basketball artwork in Kuyper's entire 30-year career. He recently auctioned a 2008 Phillies World Championship stadium scene (titled "Phinally!") for just under $10,000.
