Oh, to travel back in time and witness the Babe's first of 167 career World Series plate appearances—against none other than the great Grover Cleveland Alexander. Ol' Pete bested the Bambino, who pinch hit with one man on in the 9th...but grounded out to first. And the Phillies topped the Red Sox to boot, claiming their only win of the Series. Nearly 20,000 spectators piled into the Baker Bowl that day, in a year that Ruth enjoyed his breakout campaign (18-8 record, 2.44 ERA) and Alexander his finest statistical season (league-leading 31 wins, infinitesimal 1.22 ERA, and career-high 241 strikeouts). Little did anyone know then that it would be a 65-year drought before the Phillies won another World Series game.

To our knowledge, a mere handful of surviving Game 1 tickets have ever surfaced at auction from that historic Fall Classic debut for both Babe Ruth and the Phillies franchise. This particular example reserved a seat in the Upper Grand Stand for the then-princely sum of $5.00. The 4-1/4 x 1" full ticket has endured its century-long life quite well, rating VG condition overall. Encapsulated as Authentic by PSA.
