Si Johnson had the misfortune of playing for some terrible teams during his 17-year career, and so the right-hander's impressive talents did not translate to his statistics. But he goes down in history as a man who struck out the Bambino three times in one game, precipitating Ruth's retirement shortly thereafter. "Babe was on his way out by then," Johnson recounted at age 86. "He was practically washed up, the poor guy. Those pitches were all fastballs down the middle. People came to see the Babe hit the ball, but he was late on every swing. Don't tell anybody, but I was hoping the Babe would hit one out. He was a hell of a swell fella." Johnson's 8-1/2 x 11" contract hails from his first season with the Phillies and features the "9" signatures of both Johnson and Phils president Nugent. VG-EX condition. Auction LOA from JSA.
