While Signal Oil's standard cards show up from time to time, this is to our knowledge the very first UO-9 slide version ever to reach a major auction house. It showcases an actual, full-color acetate "positive" (3/4 x 1-3/8") that is neatly slotted into a suitably sized, die-cut gap. Our subject, Lou Stringer of the 1948 Hollywood Stars played more than 400 games at the major-league level with the Cubs and Red Sox and spent many years in the minors, mostly in the highly regarded PCL. As his bio here states, Stringer set a PCL record for fielding chances and recorded a personal best 68-game errorless streak. The 10-card 1948 Signal Oil series was produced by Ansco for local distribution by the West Coast gasoline company to highlight Pacific Coast League players from the Hollywood Stars and Los Angeles Angels clubs. Sized to 3-3/4 x 2", this obscure piece exhibits a horizontal crease through the text area of the cardboard stock, but remains bright and clean in appearance: about Good. One of the most unusually designed vintage cards imaginable, from an intriguing and locally distributed minor-league issue.
