In 1967 and 1968 Topps produced two test issues of 2-1/4” color photo discs on 2-3/8 x 2-3/8” backers with silver foil perimeters. The prevailing theory is that these handsome test sets were intended for the making of baseball player pins, which never came to fruition. Consensus has the 1968 discs as the much rarer of the two series.
Rarer still is the offered 1968 Topps Discs Jim Fregosi proof (VG-EX) due to corner wear, presents better. Meeting the dimensions noted above, this super-tough ‘60s relic features a “blue tint” photo of the California Angels all-star shortstop against a solid white background surrounded by silver foil. No team or player names are printed as is the case with the typical finished test issues and along with the blue image this leaves no doubt as to the fact that this is a production proof.
