Description

University of Florida standout John Piombo made Gator history in 1940 by scoring the winning TDs against Georgia and Georgia Tech—the first time Florida beat both teams in a single season. Against the Bulldogs, Piombo famously ran back a Fergie Ferguson blocked punt for a 55-yard score. That very ball is offered here with the painted game score and all of his Florida teammates' signatures. Piombo later became Gator Bowl Association president, and his 1960 alligator-skin presentation ball is also included. (Neither ball holds air.) Also included are a photocopied newspaper article, a photo print of Piombo holding the 1940 ball, and a program from the 1940 Florida-Georgia game. As a side note, Ferguson himself was a Gator gridiron legend and WWII veteran wounded on D-Day.
