Description

He defined baseball, he did everything to excess and, robbed of a normal childhood behind the gates of an orphanage for more than a decade, he behaved like a child for the rest of his life. For these reasons and many more, Babe Ruth is perhaps the most beloved icon in the history of American culture. Resultantly, his autograph is the cornerstone of any serious collection. The offered example is nothing short of stunning. The medium is a vintage 3-1/2 x 5-1/2” black-and-white photograph. In it, Ruth appears past his prime, but the body and spirit are more than willing as he completes his mighty swing, a trademark image to fans and an absolute terror to any pitcher who ever faced the Bambino. Executed in blue ink steel tip fountain pen, Ruth’s bold scripting projects (“8-9”) potency. The absence of quotation marks around “Babe” dates the signature to post-1930. Fittingly, the photograph itself is in remarkable condition. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
