Nicknamed the Old Master, Joe Gans was the 20th century's first black world boxing champion, and on this day, he successfully defended his lightweight crown against Battling Nelson in the longest bout of modern boxing history—42 rounds! Perhaps even more incredible, Gans broke his right hand in Round 33 and had to ward off Nelson with just his left for 9 more rounds. This 5-1/2" x 3-1/4" advertising card promotes the unlikely little locale of Goldfield, Nevada ("The Greatest Gold Camp on Earth") and the princely sum of a $30,000 purse. Sadly, Gans would succumb to tuberculosis just four years later at the age of 35. Condition is sturdy VG with peripheral surface age wear that doesn't affect the images.
