Description

“Can’t tell the payers without a scorecard!” Such was the cry that bellowed throughout the grandstands during a much simpler era of day baseball and keeping score. These (8) vintage programs feature Hall of Fame attractions seen at since-razed ballparks. Includes:

1921 Boston Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies: issued at Braves Field, the eight-page guide features pre-printed lineups that include Braves right fielder Billy Southworth; presents (EX) with covers/pages intact and unmarked scoring grids.

1923 Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers: issued at Comiskey Park on May 5, the 20-page program features pre-printed lineups that included Ty Cobb and Ray Schalk; presents (VG) with covers/pages intact and scoring grids marked in pencil to document an 8-7 White Sox triumph. There is a vertical compacting fold.

1924 Philadelphia Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers: issued at Shibe Park, the thick stock four-page scorecard features pre-printed lineups that include Ty Cobb, Harry Heilmann and Al Simmons; presents (GD) with unmarked scoring grids and both vertical and horizontal compacting folds.

1926 Boston Red Sox vs. Philadelphia Athletics: issued at Fenway Park, the thick stock eight-page program features pre-printed lineups that list a devastating visitors’ lineup with Foxx, Cochrane and Simmons! Presents (VG-EX) with a vertical compacting fold and partially marked (in pencil) hosts scoring grid.

1929 Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies: issued at Wrigley Field for the September 13 contest, the thick stock four-page souvenir features pre-printed lineups that include legends Hornsby and Cuyler; presents (VG-EX) with scoring grids marked in black ink to document a 7-6 Phillies win. There are handwritten notations on the front cover, including an errantly marked date of “Aug. 1929.”

1932 Boston Braves vs. Brooklyn Dodgers: issued at Braves Field on June 24, the thick stock eight-page guide features pre-printed lineups that include Dodgers catcher Al Lopez; presents (VG-EX) with covers/pages intact and scoring grids marked in pencil to document a 3-0 Brooklyn shutout.

1936 Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox: issued at Briggs Stadium, the thick stock folding scorecard features a photo of Tigers skipper Mickey Cochrane on the front cover, with pre-printed lineups including Luke Appling, Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin and Al Simmons; presents (VG) with unmarked scoring grids and a horizontal compacting fold.

Philadelphia Athletics vs. New York Yankees: issued at Shibe Park and scored for the opener of an August 13 twinbill, the 12-page guide features pre-printed lineups that include pinstriper stars DiMaggio, Dickey and Gordon; presents minimally (EX) with covers/pages intact and scoring grids marked in pencil to document a 12-9 Athletics victory. The win had to feel good that day as the Athletics fared miserably against the Yanks that season, going 4-18 in head-to-head play. Among the losses to the Bronx Bombers that year were two 10-0 setbacks, and thrashings of 18-4, 21-0 and 23-2!
