After more than a decade without a major issue, basketball returned to sportscard prominence with Topps famous 1969-1970 "Tall Boy" series. Issued one per pack with this oversized series was the colorful "Rulers" insert set of (23). These paper inserts were sized even larger than their cardboard counterparts, at 2-1/2 x 9-7/8". This large format forced Topps to fold these inserts over twice, resulting in three factory induced horizontal fold lines per insert. Oddball collectors score a slam dunk with this fantastic 1969-1970 Topps baseball rulers insert complete-set of (23/23). Designed with art renderings of the top NBA players of the day measured by height, these vividly colored inserts suit up in a highly desirable grade range of (EX to NM) with crisp texture across the board.
Though numbered 1-24, this set totals 23 different players, as the #5 Bill Russell ruler was not released due to his retirement. Given its paper nature, this insert set is known to be fairly tough to complete in high grade and this handsome collection positions as a sweet find populated by handsome examples overall. The #1 Walt Bellamy ruler bears what is possibly a stray printmark in the field at upper right, the #2 Jerry West ruler has two extraneous marks at top that look to have been caused by contact with a paperclip and several pieces have wax stains on the reverses, with minimal to minor impact on the obverses. Other than that, this better grade group is very pleasing.
Featured players are: #1 Walt Bellamy, #2 Jerry West, #3 Bailey Howell, #4 Elvin Hayes, #6 Bob Rule, #7 Gail Goodrich, #8 Jeff Mullins, #9 John Havlicek, #10 Lew Alcindor RC (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), #11 Wilt Chamberlain, #12 Nate Thurmond, #13 Hal Greer, #14 Lou Hudson, #15 Jerry Lucas, #16 Dave Bing, #17 Walt Frazier, #18 Gus Johnson, #19 Willis Reed, #20 Earl Monroe, #21 Billy Cunningham, #22 Wes Unseld, #23 Bob Boozer, #24 Oscar Robertson.
