The components of this vintage baseball relic are individually appealing to collectors, fans and historians, alike. Issued at New York’s Polo Grounds on May 13, 1884, this scorecard is a well-kept survivor from a Tuesday afternoon tilt between the Giants and the visiting Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The thick stock souvenir measures 7-1/4 x 6” and features pre-printed lineups and scoring grids marked in graphite pencil to document a 13-4 Giants victory in which Hall of Famer Tim Keefe logged one of his 37 mound triumphs! The piece presents nicely and has been folded at the center (like the vast majority of stadium-issued scorecards from this era). The covers feature colorful illustrations. In addition to its status as a desirable American Association relic, it holds further value in that Pittsburgh Alleghenys items are exceedingly rare. It wasn’t until 2015 that even a photograph of their home stadium (Recreation Park) was discovered in a time capsule. Beyond that, the world is limited to illustrations, memories and rare nuggets like this game-issued scorecard!
