Trailing the front-running Baltimore Orioles as the month of September began, the 1898 Boston Beaneaters went on a torrid 31-5 run to win their second straight National League pennant. These (2) scorecards were issued at South End Grounds for the September 26 twinbill against the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Each thick stock keepsake measures 7-1/2 x 9-1/2” and features pre-printed lineups that include Hall of Famers Jimmy Collins, Hugh Duffy, Billy Hamilton and Kid Nichols. Also included are Bobby Lowe (the first player to hit four home runs in a single game) and the tragically disturbed Marty Bergen. The scoring grids have been marked in graphite pencil to document the Boston sweep by scores of 10-5 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap (a make-up of the September 24 rain out). Both present nicely with small sections missing from the upper and lower right corners (not affecting the scorecard portion). The Game 1 scorecard has separation along the center fold. The sweep, coupled with Baltimore’s loss to the Washington Senators that day, increased the Beaneaters’ lead to 4-1/2 games.
