Description

First in war, first in peace and last in the American League. Well, there were a few banner seasons over the course of the first incarnation of the Washington Senators, who are amply represented in this lot of (30) stadium scorecards or programs spanning the 1921-1960 seasons. Issued at the cavernous Griffith Stadium, the guides present nicely with covers/pages intact, pre-printed lineups (on most) and scoring grids marked (on most) to document game action. Includes:

vs. New York Yankees: partially scored, possibly from August 31 game. Pre-printed Yankees lineup features Ruth batting third and Bob Muesel in the cleanup slot! Presents (VG-EX) with vertical compacting fold.

vs. St. Louis Browns: unscored with Hall of Famers Goslin, Harris and Rice in the Senators lineup. Presents (FR) with complete separation mended by tape.

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from opener of June 26 doubleheader in which Walter Johnson spun a 5-0 shutout, the 102nd of his Major League record 110! Presents (FR) with complete separation.

vs. Detroit Tigers: scored from 13-10 win on May 21. Presents (FR) with complete separation mended by vintage strip of transparent tape.

vs. New York Giants: scored from exhibition in which the Giants lineup included Jackson, Lindstrom, Roush and Terry. Presents (VG) with compacting folds.

vs. Cleveland Indians: unscored with lineups including Averill, Cronin, Goslin, Rice and Sewell. Presents (VG) with horizontal fold.

vs. Cleveland Indians: partially scored from August 9 13-7 loss to Tribe in which Hall of Famers Averill and Cronin homered. Presents (EX) with no creases and minor edge wear.

separated portions (mended by a vintage strip of transparent tape) include Senators scorecard from June 12 7-1 win over Cleveland and St. Louis Browns scorecard from June 15 4-3 Senators win.

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from April 17 11-3 loss to Philadelphia in which Jimmie Foxx homered (his third of 58 that year). Presents (EX) but technically lesser with small tear.

vs. Cleveland Indians: scored from July 9 3-2 win. Presents (EX-MT) with no creases or folds – a gorgeous survivor!

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from opener of July 4 twinbill in which Jimmie Foxx launched his 246th career home run to help spark a 10-9 Athletics win. Presents minimally (EX) with penciled date notation atop front cover.

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from nightcap of September 21 doubleheader won by Senators, 5-4. Presents (EX) with penciled date notation on front cover.

vs. Cleveland Indians: scored from opener of July 19 doubleheader won by Tribe, 11-3. Presents (EX-MT) with penciled notation on front cover.

vs. New York Yankees: scored from September 5 10-5 loss in which Lou Gehrig hit his 459th career home run and both DiMaggio and Dickey delivered doubles. Presents (EX) with penciled notation on front cover errantly dated “Sept. 4.”

vs. Detroit Tigers: scored from August 27 12-11 loss in which Hank Greenberg hit his 44th home run. Presents (NM) with no creases or folds!

vs. Detroit Tigers: unscored; presents (EX)

vs. St. Louis Browns: partially scored; presents (EX) with minor discoloration.

vs. St. Louis Browns: scored from Game 2 of May 3 twinbill in which the Senators were felled, 5-1. Presents (EX) with penciled notation on front cover.

vs. New York Yankees: scored from September 19 3-2 win over Bronx Bombers in which Senators tied it in the 9th and won in the 10th. Hall of Famer Early Wynn went the distance. Presents (EX).

vs. St. Louis Browns: scored from May 11 4-2 win over eventual league champion St. Louis. Presents (VG-EX) with moderate discoloration, edge wear.

vs. Boston Red Sox: scored from June 15 6-5 loss (14 innings) in Game 1 of a twinbill. Presents minimally (EX).

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from August 10 8-7 win. Presents (EX) but has moisture-induced stains on Senators scorecard.

vs. Boston Red Sox: unscored, likely issued late in season as Ted Williams is not listed in the Red Sox’ pre-printed lineup. Presents (VG-EX) with various creases.

vs. Philadelphia Athletics: scored from July 7 4-3 loss to A’s. Presents (VG-EX) with tiny hole on front cover.

vs. St. Louis Browns: unscored, likely from July 20 doubleheader opener (based on penciled notations of pitchers Pillette and Merrero). Presents (EX-MT).

vs. Cleveland Indians: scored from September 13 twinbill opener in which Cleveland prevailed, 3-1. Tri-fold style item presents (EX-MT).

vs. New York Yankees: scored from May 18 3-0 loss to Yanks. Program presents (EX) with minor front cover crease at lower right corner.

vs. Boston Red Sox: scored from the September 17 2-1 loss to Carmines in which Ted Williams hit the 520th of his 521 career home runs. Program presents (EX) with minor wrinkling on front cover.
