While the changes have been gradual, the game of baseball is drastically different today than it was in the 1950s. For starters, nobody would dare flip his bat and admire a home run back then (unless he wanted a fastball behind his head in his next at-bat). Another glaring difference is uniform material. Tailored during the 1950s, this heavy flannel jersey is a reminder of the discomfort players had to endure on those hot summer days. The gray button-down garment features “VENEER” arched across the chest in blue-on-yellow felt, while blue-and-yellow piping lines the collar, button path and sleeve endings. Within the collar, a vintage “Athletic Supply Company” label is accompanied by a size “40” flap tag. At the base of the button path, a “Dodge Davis” label denotes “Genuine Flannel.” The item shows moderate wear with pilling throughout and four holes (as tailored) under each arm to facilitate ventilation.
