A bonus baby with a bright future, 24-year-old Orioles catcher Tom Gastall died in a plane crash on September 20, 1956, during his second season. Gastall had made his major-league debut on June 21, 1955, and this autographed photo postcard is postmarked to just over a week later. It is personalized to young fan Louis on the front and back, with the kind-hearted message, "I was very glad to hear from you. It's very nice to hear you are interested in Baseball. I thought you might like this card rather than just an autograph. Sincerely Tom Gastall." The 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" postcard rates VG overall with tiny surface-impression dots on the front and light-brown spotting on the reverse. Gastall's handwriting changes tone slightly and ranges from "8-10" in strength. Full LOA from JSA.
