Given the paucity of 19th-century baseball guides in any condition—let alone well-preserved examples—we were blown away by the sight of Ben Cavallo's collection of rare Beadle's Dime, De Witt's, Wright & Ditson and Bull Durham guides. Beadle's are especially elusive, with single surviving copies from the 1860s having sold at auction for as much as $1,800. The series debuted in 1860 and skipped a year in 1863 for the Civil War, making this pair the 4th and 5th editions that were produced. Both exhibit PR condition, with 1864 having a partial back cover and heavily taped spine, while 1865 has a partial front cover and no back cover.
