From a not-too-distant era during which the ground game ruled the NFL, Newsweek released a cover story aptly entitled “The Running Backs” in its December 4, 1972 issue. None other than LeRoy Neiman was commissioned for the cover art and the product, of course, was an eye-catching rendition. This artist’s proof of that cover image was composed and signed by Neiman. Framed to 29-1/8 x 35”, the canvas features, at close glance, a series of random color applications with no definitive outlines. Combined, however, those hues comprise a telling likeness of Washington Redskins great Larry Brown. In the lower right corner, Neiman has signed the work in graphite pencil (“8” strength).
