As the field had increased from eight teams in 1950 to 16 teams (1951, 1952) to 22 (1953), the NCAA Men’s Basketball tourney was up to 24 in 1954 – and rife with controversy, as well. Top-ranked Kentucky authored an unblemished 25-0 campaign but was still feeling the effects of its 1951 point-shaving scandal and with several key players ruled ineligible, coach Adolph Rupp declined to participate. That opened the door for first-time entrant LaSalle, which bested Bradley, 92-76 to win the title. This program was issued at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium for that 16th annual championship. The 32-page guide presents (EX-MT) with crease-free covers and crisp pages intact throughout. We note a tiny tear on the lower portion of the back cover, which hardy detracts from the overall appearance. The contents include team and player photos, as well as roster listings. The USC-Penn State (consolation game) scorecard page remains unmarked, while the title contest scoring grids are marked in graphite pencil with the starters’ uniform numbers circled.
