With his fourth different team in as many years, ornery superstar Rogers Hornsby enjoyed his second MVP season to no doubt offset his difficult personality and lead the Cubs to the 1929 National League pennant. While it’s well documented that he rarely befriended even his own teammates, Hornsby was captured by the camera’s eye in, dare we say, a friendly gesture during that memorable campaign. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, this Type I black-and-white photograph depicts Hornsby shaking hands with Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Paul Waner prior to the May 21, 1929 game at Wrigley Field. The item presents beautifully with Associated Press stampings on the reverse, as well as the original caption sheet. Incidentally, Hornsby hit a three-run homer that afternoon to spark a Cubs rally and overcome a 6-2 deficit.
