Description

A wealth of "Turn of the Century" world leaders, artists, scientists, entertainers, athletes and others are brought together in this encompassing photo album titled "Collection Felix Potin" on the front cover, with the subtitle "500 Celebrites Contemporaines" printed on the first page. Retailer Felix Potin was a "chain store" pioneer, who began business operations in Paris, in the year 1844. After his demise his business continued to grow, reaching a total of seventy outlets by the early 1900s. The offered album dates to c.1900 and includes a near-set of (480/500) photo cards.

Formatted similar to tobacco card issues of the period, this set features a selection of photos of famous persons from France, along with other European countries and farther away, including the sitting U.S. President William McKinley. Some of the many famous persons pictured are French President Emile Loubet, Queen Victoria of England, Belgian King Leopold II, Russian Emperor Alexandre III, Pope Leo XIII, Gustave Eiffel, Louis Pasteur, Thomas Edison, explorers Stanley & Livingston, Alexandre Dumas, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henrik Ibsen, Leo Tolstoi, Emile Zola, Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, Johann Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi, Auguste Rodin and Sarah Bernhardt. The album remains serviceable with light to moderate wear, including a 1" section of surface loss at the top of the spine and the cards generally present as better to excellent.
