As Interleague play and more expansion invaded the game under Bud Selig’s watch, the New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays did battle on July 17, 1999 in a “Turn-Back-The-Clock” event (a not-so-brilliant idea, seeing as the Rays were only in their second season of existence). While the host Rays opted to wear Tampa Bay Tarpons (a defunct minor league team) apparel, the Mets went with 1969 road uniforms. This jersey was worn and signed by Hall of Fame backstop Mike Piazza that day. The gray flannel button-down garment features “NEW YORK” arched across the chest in blue-on-orange felt, while “31” is sewn to the back and left front in like fashion. Just below the front number, Piazza has signed in blue marker (“7-8” strength) and inscribed "G/U." Blue piping lines the collar and button path, while the 1969 MLB silhouette logo “100th Anniversary” patch is sewn to the left sleeve. Within the collar, a “Mitchell & Ness” label is accompanied by a size “XXL” tag. The left front tail is home to a swatch with a chain stitched legend reading “T.B.C. 7-17-99.” Single-event wear is evident and the sleeves are torn along the lower seam (likely to facilitate comfort and ventilation). Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA (for autograph).
