In our industry, potential “walk-in” consignors are a daily occurrence. Most often, the offered material is relatively common or hobby staples which have been offered several times before. However, there is always that "once in a blue moon” find that immediately grabs our complete attention. Such is the case of the offered 1911 Jones, Keyser & Arras Cabinets #346 Honus Wagner! Graded Authentic by SGC. This recently uncovered artifact rested undisturbed for several decades prior to being recently purchased in Maryland.
What an image! The “Flying Dutchmen” admires his handiwork during a season in which he paced the Senior Circuit in both batting average and OPS (on-base plus slugging). The awe-inspiring sepia action pose is perfectly centered on the 4-7/8 x 7-1/4” gray-and-black mount. Despite a series of six pin holes along each corner/middle edges along with perimeter wear, the brunt of which is located on the upper corners, the overall presentation of this 108-year-old antique is still breathtaking. While the photograph displays mild surface foxing, the subject and its grand ballpark setting is still instantly recognizable. The reverse is inscribed “Honus Wagner 1874-1955, Pirates shortstop, 8 NL Batting titles” in pencil. Otherwise, the reverse has sustained only moderate creasing and chipping which does not protrude the obverse.
