Trace the prehistory of Sports Illustrated magazine with this complete run of (5) issues published by Dell in 1949. The first version of Sports Illustrated was published by Stuart Scheftel from 1936-1938 and did not focus on major sports. Dell Publications eventually bought the rights and then released a second over-sized format version with emphasis on the sports of baseball, basketball and boxing, as evidenced by the cover photos of the issues offered here. After this short run in 1949, this second version of SI was shelved and in 1954 a third iteration, being the current long-running SI we all know and love, was launched.
Now fairly tough to come by, these (5) 1949 Dell issues are very handsome, with a condition average of (EX to EX-MT) making for a real find. Featured are: February with Ralph Beard basketball cover; March with Marcel Cerdan boxing cover; April with Lou Boudreau baseball cover; May with Joe DiMaggio baseball cover (single letter “H” written on cover); and June with Rex Barney baseball cover.
