Having inked a 1980 contract to become baseball’s first-ever $1 million-per-year player, 33-year-old Nolan Ryan wasn’t even halfway through with a remarkable 27-year career earmarked by an intimidating fastball that produced seven no-hitters. Matching his gaudy annual stipend, this Houston Astros home jersey was worn and autographed by the Texas-born flamethrower during the 1982 season, a campaign in which Ryan eclipsed the 200 win plateau. The knit pullover garment features a headache-inducing horizontal pattern of bright red, orange and yellow stripes. A blue-on-white applique five-point star adorns the lower left front, while “Astros” is sewn across the chest in blue twill. On the back, the since-retired number “34” is sewn in blue-on-white twill, while “RYAN” is arched in blue twill on a nameplate just above. On the upper right front, Ryan has signed in black marker (“8” strength) and inscribed “To Cindy, Best Wishes.” Blue stretch ribbed knit lines the V-Neck, while the left front tail is home to a “Medalist – Sand-Knit” size “44” label, a Houston Astros exclusivity tag and a swatch with “82” and “44” identifiers. Moderate wear is evident and colors remain vibrant on this desirable gamer worn by a legendary workhorse. Accompanying are full photo LOAs from Dave Miedema (for game use) and JSA (for autograph).
