No matter how lopsided the odds may appear, there’s a reason you play the game. Such was the case in Super Bowl III, a pre-merger AFL-NFL battle in which the Baltimore Colts took the field as overwhelming 18-point favorites. An air of defiance permeated the Orange Bowl, however, as brash New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath “guaranteed” victory. And so it happened, a stunning 16-7 Jets triumph that preceded the Mets’ “Amazin’” conquest of the Orioles just nine months later. Issued in limited quantities to members of the media for that memorable gridiron tilt, this tie clip is among a scant few survivors! The gold-colored metallic relic features a fully functioning hinged clasp and a rectangular bar on which a relief silhouette likeness of Florida is the setting for a football helmet on which raised characters read: “AFL vs NFL - 3rd WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – 1969 – MIAMI.” Accompanying is a blank 8-1/2 x 11” sheet of AFL-NFL World Championship Game letterhead (MINT with no creases or flaws).
