Ordinarily a .707 winning percentage would be considered a very successful season for a baseball team, but in the case of the 1886 Detroit Wolverines their record of 87-36 was only good enough for second fiddle. National League supremacy that year belonged to the Chicago White Stockings, who topped Detroit's record by 2-1/2 games, winning at a .726 clip with a record of 90-34, to earn the NL championship. Both of these remarkable teams were loaded with big name stars, as evidenced by the offered 1886 Chicago White Stockings vs Detroit Wolverines scorecard, which lists a total of seven players who are enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Printed on both sides of a single sheet of paper stock, this antique scorecard is a miracle of preservation, presenting in highly desirable (VG) condition. The perimeter bears a few small edge tears, including occurrences at the top and bottom of an original period compacting fold at center, otherwise the sheet remains fairly crisp and clean. Printed in the lineups are a good number of the greatest players of the era, with Cap Anson, King Kelly and John Clarkson for the Chicago squad; and Ned Hanlon, Dan Brouthers, Sam Thompson and Deacon White for the Detroit nine. Also noted are diagonal overstamps in red at top left on both sides, advertising a tobacco product.
