Description

Scroll through Ron Stark's website gallery, or search through his auction records, and you'll quickly see that Stark focuses exclusively on baseball portraiture from the 1900s (Cobb, Wagner, Shoeless Joe) up through the 1960s (Mantle, Koufax, Clemente). With one notable exception: Derek Jeter. No other modern ballplayer has received the Stark treatment. Even Jeter has only been Ron's subject a mere two times—once for a batting-practice, half-length profile portrait (linked here), and once for the privately commissioned oil-on-canvas painting presented here. The flag patch on Jeter's jersey pinpoints the year as 2001, when Mr. November earned his nickname with "The Flip" play and a World Series walk-off homer. It's also a poignant reminder of how Jeter and the Yankees helped America heal after the September 11th attacks. Ron Stark's trademark realism is on full display from the light and shadow playing off Jeter's reflective helmet down to the folds in his uniform and the spray of batter's-box dirt at his feet. Dimensions are 16x20, handsomely matted and framed to measure 18-1/2" x 22-1/2".
