An inspiration to the world of photography, Phillipe Halsman (d.1979) demonstrated a flair for the unusual in his genius approach to producing some of the most memorable photographs ever seen. Renowned for his thrilling 1940s collaboration with Salvador Dali, this master photographer also took mesmerizing shots of a host of celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Groucho Marx and Bob Hope. Here we see an unpublished Halsman photo of baseball legend Connie Mack. This clean and solid 9 x 10-3/4" photograph presents in very pleasing (NM) condition with nice gloss, firm texture and just slight touches of wear. The "Tall Tactician" is pictured imparting wisdom in a familiar dugout scene, nattily attired as always in sharp contrast to a muted background. Originating during a shoot that is reported to have produced published images of the longtime Philadelphia A's owner-manager, this captivating photo is marked on the reverse with excellent provenance, including a "Colliers" magazine "7/30/48" date stamp with the editorial notation "not used" and reference numbers for "Issue: Sep L4" and "Job No: CO 767"; Halsman's credit stamp with New York address; a Halsman copyright stamp; the written notation "Connie Mack, 1948"; and a written inventory number "US-191".
