While we marvel at the exploding values of all things related to the Marvel Comics Universe, let's pause for a look at some of the brand's earliest super-hero merchandising efforts. Marvel got into the costumed crusader business in 1961 with the launch of the Fantastic Four and by the mid-1960s the " Merry Marvel Marching Society" was going strong with a roster of characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk, Daredevil, Sub-Mariner and of course the FF. These classic heroes are seen in this collection of vintage trading cards and stickers, housed in a period Topps "Hobby Card Album".
Featured are: 1966 Donruss Marvel Super-Heroes complete set of (66) cards; and 1967 Philadelphia Gum near set of (51/55) stickers. All of these Donruss cards and Philly stickers look as though they went straight from the pack into the repurposed Topps album, with the visible portions showing average NM to MT details, however a spot check of several examples revealed diagonal surface impressions at the point where contact with the album slots is made. Otherwise these stunning examples present as pristine and the album is very attractive with minor wear at the corners. While sets of the 1966 Donruss cards come up regularly, the 1967 Philly stickers are seldom seen in large groups and this near set rates as a very nice find.
The (4) absent stickers are numbers 17, 21, 37 and 47.
