As he embarked on his 20th Major League season, Georgia-born Ty Cobb did anything but “mellow” with age. In fact, the 37-year-old was as competitive and hell-bent on that elusive World Series title as he’d ever been, reaching the 200-hit plateau for the ninth time in his magnificent career. As his double and 3,480th career hit went for naught in a 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Browns, Cobb autographed this OAL Johnson baseball. The orb shows the effects of diamond use and showcases alternating red-and-blue laces. On a side panel, Cobb has signed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen. Accented by his customary paraph, Cobb’s scripting projects (“4-5”) potency with lesser pen pressure at the tail end of the surname preventing higher assessment. In an unknown hand, “Detroit Americans May 3-1924” is inscribed just below. Incidentally, Cobb’s 1-for-4 performance that day lowered his average to .422. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
