Established in 1924 as a vacation home resort with swimming and boating amenities for its members, New Jersey’s Cranberry Lake Community Club was a luxury, yes, but at the time, didn’t offer the excitement that Babe Ruth was providing nearby in the Bronx. Among the most unusual keepsakes we’ve encountered, this Cranberry Lake plaque has been autographed by Ruth. Measuring 5-1/4 x 7-1/2”, the sturdy wooden plaque features a metallic plate with the establishment’s logo design and a printed label with the recipient’s name. Just below, two “Junior Day” medallions were awarded likely to a young participant. But the resort and all of its features obviously paled in comparison with the larger than life Ruth, who was asked to sign and complied! Executed in graphite pencil on the reverse (as Ruth wasn’t about to share a canvas with some “member’s only” institution), Ruth’s bold signature takes well to the surface and projects (“8”) strength and clarity and likely dates to post-1928 (as the absence of quotation marks around "Babe" suggests). Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
