What if? What if Charles Comiskey—notoriously stingy with his own players—willingly made this refund to a disgruntled White Sox fan who had witnessed such a poorly played World Series, not knowing the fix was in? In this centennial year of the Black Sox scandal, let's indulge our imaginations with the theory, if for no other reason than that the letter dates to mere days after the Fall Classic ended. "Herewith enclosed please find check for $9.90 covering refund due you on ticket," writes Comiskey, whose black-fountain-pen signature rates "9" strength. Measuring 8-1/2" x 11", the official team stationery sheet features a beautifully embossed World Series logo celebrating the Pale Hose's 1906 and 1917 championships. VG with toning throughout. Full LOA from JSA.
