Having amassed 3,152 hits during his MLB playing career, HOFer Paul Waner seems an apt choice for a batting instructor. In his later years he filled this role on a part-time basis for several teams and was credited by Ted Williams for helping him deal with the defensive shifts he often faced. Waner is seen here imparting some wisdom to Boston Braves player Earl Torgeson in a c.1952 original Type I photo (VG-EX+) taken by William Jacobellis. This high quality 4x5 photo shows exceptional resolution, with a composition that has a familiar feeling of being up close with the subjects. Jacobellis has stamped the reverse with his standard photographer's credit and the subjects are named in white lettering at bottom of the obverse. Full photo LOA from PSA/DNA.
H&S has enjoyed great success of late with contact proofs and Type I photos from the archives of William Jacobellis and Bob Olen. We are pleased to continue these offerings in our current August, 2019 auction, with another round of Jacobellis photos featuring baseball HOFers and stars of the 1950s, including Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby as a manager. In this current round, the majority of the individual photos on offer were used for 1950s Bowman or Topps baseball cards. As these photos are condition sensitive due to black borders, in many cases they present better than the assigned technical grades. To review the currently offered photos please see our Baseball Cards & Vintage Memorabilia/Baseball Original Photos category.
