Poet, journalist, teacher, humanist, transcendentalist and vagabond, Walt Whitman (d.1892) was all these things and much more. One of the most influential literary figures in American history, Whitman continues to impact each new generation of readers and thinkers. Lay claim to an important piece of Americana, with this boldly signed 4-3/8 x 7-1/4" cabinet photo. This antique keepsake is printed at bottom with "Photo'd from life, Sept. '72, Brooklyn, N.Y. by G.F.E. Pearsall, Fulton St. (Printed by C.F. Spieler, Phila.)". A sturdy example to be sure, Whitman's prominent signature projects ("8-9") potency and is accompanied by an inscription of his birth date, appearing as "born May 31 1819".
As this image was taken in 1872 and Whitman's passing came in 1892, an obvious twenty-year window for the photo's signing is established. Advanced collectors will be pleased that this photo remains clean and bright with nice gloss, however a 1/4" of the original backer card is absent and has been replaced by a strip of heavy stock paper. This repair has no ill effect on the highly appealing photo, which depicts the gray-bearded Whitman as a relaxed and wizened sage. So there you have it, one of the literary world's true greats, seen in a handsome period photo, graced with a big and bold autograph. Bank account be damned, go for it!
