Description

In the era before the inundation of cable and satellite television and resultant access to just about any event we want, closed circuit feeds commanded a hefty price for boxing enthusiasts who sought to view the action live. And while many may not have thought it was worth it to see Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston defend his title against 7-to-1 underdog Cassius Clay, this original 1964 broadside was issued for the first of the combatants’ two historic bouts. Mounted to a black thick-stock poster board of 18 x 26-18”, the 14 x 21-7/8” poster shows black-and-white likenesses of both pugilists against a bright-yellow background. Issued by the “PALACE THEATRE” in Peoria, Illinois, the item urges potential viewers with bold-type proclamations including “NO HOME TV.” The item is professionally matted and presents nicely – a lot nicer than Liston following Clay’s stunning upset – with minor edge fissures along the right-side border and evidence of previous display.
