19th Century tobacco specialists find a remarkable prize with this 1887 D. Buckner & Co. bronze statue clock. This rare late Victorian Era premium was offered as part of a redemption program in conjunction with Buckner's "One of the Finest" tobacco brand. To claim this spectacular prize, you would have had to amass 600 of Buckner's 1887-1888 N288 "Police Inspectors & Captains and Chiefs of the Fire Departments" tobacco cards, a tall order to claim this 18" tall prize. The third most valuable of seven possible prizes made available with this marketing scheme, this policeman statue clock has an estimated production quantity of 100 pieces, with survivors numbering a scant few. Manufacturing provenance is readily noted on the back of the 5x7 base, with raised lettering that reads "No. 1102, D. Buckner & Co., New York, Copyright 1877 by N. Muller's Sons N.Y." As is typical with the remaining examples of this antique production, the clock face and policeman's nightstick are absent, otherwise this richly patinated figural is a visual delight with well defined details and great period authenticity.
