Description

A Hall of Fame slugger and a time-honored photographer combine on this diamond heirloom worthy of high praise. The medium is an 8x10” original Type I photo taken by renowned shutterbug George Burke. The subject and endorser is former Detroit Tigers great Hank Greenberg. The pose dates to post-1934 and depicts Greenberg completing his mighty right-handed swing at Briggs Stadium. Raised in the Bronx, Greenberg embarked on a big league career during which he nearly matched the single-season home run mark of a more famous Bronx icon. Executed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen, Greenberg’s flowing signature projects (“9”) strength and clarity. The crease-free photo is minimally affected by a series of stains (perhaps a developing fluid) along the right border (far from the autograph). On the reverse, Burke’s studio stamping dates to the referenced time period. There is a series of penciled numeric notations and scribbling on the reverse. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
