As World War II came to a close, the 1945 Army Black Knights continued to fight – did they ever! Posting a 9-0 mark that included five shutouts and an aggregate score of 412-46, the academy won its second straight National Championship. This original Type I photograph depicts the team’s offensive unit and is autographed by all (11) subjects. The black-and-white heirloom measures 8-15/16 x 7-1/8” and depicts the Cadets in two tiers: linemen up front and backfield behind. Each player has signed in blue-ink steel tip fountain pen. Emerging more prominently against the white backdrop of the sky, the four backfield signatures average (“6-7”) potency and include (from left to right): Bob Chabot, Dick Walterhouse (d.2016), Heisman Trophy winner Doc Blanchard (d.2007) and Glenn Davis (d.2005). Below, the linemen scriptings are somewhat obscured by the background. Averaging (“4”) quality, these endorsements include (from left to right): Hank Foldberg, Al Nemetz, Al Gerometta, unidentified, John Green, Tex Coulter (d.2007) and Dick Pitzer (d.2003). A vintage West Point photo credit stamping appears on the reverse. Auction LOA from JSA.
