Shunned by both the University of Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback hopeful Johnny Unitas was dismissed as “too skinny” at the former institution and was not even allowed to take a snap in his audition with the Steelers. But from a humble endeavor at the University of Louisville, Unitas latched on with the Baltimore Colts and the rest is Hall of Fame history. This original Type I photograph portrays Unitas with the Louisville Cardinals and is decorated with perhaps the earliest of his coveted autographs! Encapsulated with autograph assessed “Authentic” by SGC, the 5x7” black-and-white photo shows Unitas in a football pose, wearing an unfamiliar number “16” on the Louisville gridiron. Executed in black ink, Unitas’ signature projects (“8”) strength and is a very early variation, as he always signed “Johnny Unitas” during and after his NFL career. Preceding the scripting is his inscription of “With Best Wishes.”
