Pennants in the literal sense were once quite popular forms of display at Major League ballparks, though are rarely (if ever) seen today as a live show of support. Pennants in the achievement sense have been commonplace for close to 100 years in the Bronx. Here’s a vintage example that celebrates the club’s second of a then-record four successive flags (since surpassed only by the franchise’s 1949-1953 run). The three-quarter size blue felt gonfalon features an applique flag design which reads “PENNANT 1937” and is flanked above and below by respective proclamations of “NEW YORK YANKEES” and “AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.” To the right, upper-case applique identifiers list (15) team members, including Hall of Famers Dickey, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Gomez and Lazzeri. Listed as “Very Rare” in Mike Egner’s 2013 Vintage Pennant Price Guide II, this scarce survivor presents beautifully with very minor color fading and applique identifiers near 100%! The spine remains completely intact and, of the four original tassels, all remain while only one has a small portion missing. Additionally, there are no pinholes from previous display! This very well may be the finest example you’ll ever behold.
