As 12,756 packed the Detroit Olympia for the Red Wings’ 1946-47 season opener, they hadn’t the slightest premonition that they were witnessing the debut of perhaps the most durable player in the history of American sports. Midway through the second period, 18-year-old Saskatchewan native Gordon Howe netted his first of 1,049 career goals to begin a professional career of 32 years. This program was issued in the Motor City that evening (October 16, 1946) for that historic unveiling of “Mr. Hockey.” The 28-page guide features rosters, schedules (including one for the Basketball Association of America’s ill-fated Detroit Falcons), as well as player photos and advertisements for local establishments. With covers and pages completely intact, this Hockeytown, USA keepsake is in spectacular condition! There are no folds or creases (which are inherent to the vast majority of stadium-issued publications from this era). With very minor fissures confined to the border of the back cover, the program presents minimally (EX-MT).
