Up basically against the three-time defending World Series champion New York Yankees, the 1939 National League All-Star team was felled, 3-1 in a Mid-Summer Classic that was held at Yankee Stadium and saw skipper Joe McCarthy start six of his Bronx Bombers (and allow his five position players to go the distance). Gathered at a reunion some three decades later, (14) members of that Senior Circuit roster autographed this baseball. The creamy OAL Cronin orb (grade “7-8”) dates specifically to 1960-1969 and is the canvas for blue ballpoint scriptings that range between (“8-9”) and (“4”) in terms of strength and clarity. Includes: Sweet Spot: Joe Medwick (d.1975, “6-7” strength); North Panel: Stan Hack (d.1979), Babe Phelps (d.1992), Bill Lee (d.1977), Ernie Lombardi (d.1977, “5-6” strength), Lonny Frey (d.2009) and Lou Fette (d.1981); South Panel: Ival Goodman (d.1984); West Panel: Billy Herman (clubhouse), Gabby Hartnett (manager, d.1972, “8” strength), Frank McCormick (d.1982) and Paul Derringer (d.1987); East Panel: Bucky Walters (d.1991), Harry Danning (d.2004) and Bill Terry (clubhouse) and Reverse Sweet Spot: Johnny Vander Meer (d.1997). Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
