Oh to have been a baseball fan eighty years ago. The New York Yankees ruled the MLB kingdom, but noble opponents Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer and many other greats of the game sure gave 'em "what fer". Yankees legends Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Bill Dickey joined forces with the other top players of the day to form the 1938 AL All-Star team, as evidenced with this 1930s mini-bat lot of (2). These stadium souvenirs show moderate wear with great period authenticity and the facsimile signatures decorating their surfaces remain discernible upon close inspection, while some are visible at arm's length. Featured are:
1938 American League All-Star team 22" bat with facsimile signatures of manager Joe McCarthy and all position players, with starters Bill Dickey, Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Gehringer, Buddy Lewis, Joe Cronin, Mike Kreevich, Earl Averill and Joe DiMaggio; and reserves Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, Rudy York, Doc Cramer, Cecil Travis, Rick Ferrell, Bob Johnson and Red Rolfe. Maybe they had a souvenir baseball for the pitchers, but they do not appear on this handsome big game keepsake for the first decade of MLB All-Star Game action.
