Description

The House That Ruth Built! This is an actual construction photo with numerous workers visible throughout the grandstand, and a lone worker enjoying the bird's-eye view from his perch atop the unfinished center-field scoreboard. The dugouts and sideline boxes are also still being assembled, while the brand-new loge on the third-base side proudly displays White Construction Company's sign, "Let WHITE Build it of CONCRETE," which had originally hung on the company's site shack. Commuters on passing trains looming above the outfield wall could bear witness to all 284 days of construction, amounting to a total cost of $2.4 million and including 2,300 tons of steel and a million brass screws! The 7" x 10-3/4" photo is a Type I example carrying Pacific & Atlantic's news-service stamping on reverse. There is perimeter toning and edge chipping commensurate with news photography of the period.
