Award-winning Washington Post photographer Dick Darcey (1929-2003) covered presidents, astronauts and, above all, athletes. He’s best remembered for striking shots of Redskins Sonny Jurgensen, John Riggins and Charley Taylor; Senators Harmon Killebrew, Frank Howard and Ted Williams; Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing; and ring legends Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. Post columnist Thomas Boswell called Darcey "the best newspaper sports photographer of his day." Tragically, the vast majority of Darcey’s photographic archive was swept out to sea in flooding. Thus, these original Darcey prints are among the rare survivors. Provenance-wise, they hail from the same magnificent collection as the William Jacobellis, Bob Olen and Henry Barr photos that Huggins & Scott has had the privilege of handling over the past few years. Indeed, Darcey belongs to that same elite pantheon of 20th-century master photographers.

Dick Darcey's access and artistic acumen are on full display in this endearingly intimate shot of Manager Ted Williams holding a young child aloft. It's Teddy Ballgame as we've never seen him before and as only Darcey could capture him! Measures 11x14. EX condition.
