Though the scene took an abrupt turn from the raucous partying of the "Roaring '20s" to the grim days of the "Great Depression" in the 1930s, athletics remained a constant. Evidence arrives in the form of this 1920s-1930s German-American Club medal lot of (33). Specifically spanning the 1920-1933 "Prohibition Era", this collection of weightlifting and wrestling awards includes many pieces that are engraved with affiliations and dates. Though much of the language is German, American Midwest locales such as Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee and St. Louis are most frequently noted as the cities of origin. (2) Medals are marked "950", indicating a plus level sterling silver composition and nearly all of these antique specimens have metal title plates or ribbons attached. All in all this heavy metal assortment rocks, with overall condition ranging above average to better. A number are obviously silver-plated and show considerable toning, while others are bronze, brass or possibly gold-plated pieces that generally report as the brighter pieces. All are designed with relief images of wrestlers and weightlifters, that show minimal to moderate wear, that is totally age-appropriate. Award yourself with this winning collection.
