Playing for one of the best teams of all-time, Maris did what was unimaginable for baseball's hierarchy and press corps, by breaking Babe Ruth's sacred single-season home run record. Roger is long gone, but his legacy lives on in this mega-important 10/2/61 Sports Illustrated Vol 15, #14 issue. Ranked as #1 on the "Hardest to Find" list of SI back issues, this "World Series Preview" edition is graced with a photo of Maris taking a determined swing, along with the caption "No. 60, Full Story of the Long Chase". In light of this being the first time Maris was featured on the cover of an issue of SI and the historic importance of the '61 season, this vintage magazine is nothing less than a true hobby treasure, especially given the better grade of (7.0) supplied by top certification service CGC. As this issue was published during SI's "Dark Print Era", the assigned grade is more than respectable for examples from this tough, condition sensitive period. This very desirable grade designation also earns this major key issue example a Census rank of "1/4", with 6 higher. So there you have it, a certified high quality example of the #1 known rarity in the Sports Illustrated run, featuring a famous slugger at the doorstep of breaking what is arguably the most revered record in baseball history!
