Description

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about the New York Giants teams of the early '50s. Regularly outshone by their crosstown rivals the Yankees and the Dodgers, the Giants grabbed their fair share of the spotlight over the period of 1950-1955, which saw some thrilling moments, great players and two trips to the World Series. The Giants won the National League pennant in 1951 when Bobby Thomson hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World". The 1954 World Series triumph over the heavily favored 111-win Cleveland Indians was a thrill ride that saw "The Catch" by Willie Mays, along with some truly incredible pinch-hitting heroics by the colorful "Dusty" Rhodes, whose idea of training was a visit to a local saloon. Mays joined fellow Negro League star Monte Irvin with the Giants in 1951 and after returning from military service, he had a breakout year in '54. "Sal the Barber" Maglie was a mainstay in the pitching rotation, Johnny Antonelli won 21 games in '54, Hoyt Wilhelm held down the bullpen fort and through it all Leo "the Lip" Durocher was in charge. Many of the men who made all of this possible have contributed autographs to this 1952-1955 New York Giants team-signed baseball lot of (3). The dozens of autographs included were period-signed on early edition ONL/Giles baseballs, with Willie Mays appearing on (2). Auction LOA from JSA.
